今日のコンテンポラリージャズで、Eugene Ballほどユニークな表現を持つアーティストは少ない。30年以上に渡り、彼は世界各国でHoodangers、Allan Browne Quintet、Andrea Keller Quartet、Australian Art Orchestra、Black Arm Bandなどと演奏とレコーディングを果たしている。

多方面から絶賛された2016年のデビューアルバム“Hi(gh) Curious”に続き、“From Down Here”はこのカルテットの２枚目となり、かなりの力作。

“From Down Here”は通常のジャズアルバムではない。綺麗なメロディーや目立ったソロ、従来の楽器の役割を予想してはいけない。このアルバムは勇敢で冒険的、象徴的。Ballが自身の作品で綴るモチーフは予期せぬ形で現れ、巧みなインプロヴィゼーションでそれらは縫い合わせられる。アルバムのタイトルは、時に我々のものの見方を歪ませる人生の憂鬱と退屈を表現している。

バンドメンバーは長年の共演相手、そしてトップレベルのアーティストJames Macaulay(tb)、Mick Meagher(b)、James McLean(d)。James Macaulayは2017年National Jazz Awardを受賞し、トロンボーンの可能性を再定義するテクニックと表現の持ち主。Mick Meagherは10年以上に渡り、エレクトリックベースの音世界を広げることに専念している。2016年のFreedman Jazz FellowshipであるJames McLeanは、韓国の伝統的な要素を取り入れた独自のメソッドを編み出したドラマー。

From Down Hereの録音、ミックス、そして共同プロデュースははPhil Noyの秀でた感性により行われ、バンドメンバーの一員と言えるほど彼の技術はこのアルバムの完成に貢献している。

In contemporary jazz today, few artists possess a voice as unique and distinctive as trumpeter, Eugene Ball. For over three decades he has performed and recorded across the globe with the likes of the Hoodangers, the Allan Browne Quintet, the Andrea Keller Quartet, the Australian Art Orchestra, and the Black Arm Band.

In 2016 Eugene released his debut 4tet release, Hi(gh) Curious, to great acclaim. Eugene is immensely proud to proffer the 4tet's sophomore release, From Down Here.

From Down Here is no ordinary jazz album. Don't expect neat melodies, distinct solos, and traditional instrumental roles. From Down Here is brave, adventurous, iconoclastic. Improvisation is the binding thread - the composed material (penned by Eugene) appears unexpectedly; a series of character-laden cameos. The album title speaks to the blanketing melancholy, the pervasive ennui that can at times obscure our perspective of life.

Joining Eugene on this adventure are long-standing collaborators, James Macaulay, Mick Meagher, and James McLean. These are musicians and humans of the highest order. James Macaulay, winner of the 2017 National Jazz Award, has redefined the very limits of fluency and dexterity expected of the modern trombonist. Mick Meagher has devoted the last decade to expanding the sonic palette of the electric bass. James McLean, winner of the 2016 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, has developed an artistic practice on the drum set that incorporates Korean principles of embodied fluidity.

From Down Here was recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Phil Noy. The studio, masterfully wielded by Phil, is an equal member of the ensemble.
